CNOC Ná ROS OLDBOYS CLUB

Cnoc Na Ros (Hill of the Roses) was founded as a social club in the Rosemount area in 1925. We still have in our possession the original Memorandum of Agreement with its old 2-shilling stamp dated March 7th 1925 signed by its founders William Quigley and Francis Mellon. From then until 1973, when its premises were burnt, the club provided a much-needed social focus for the men of the Rosemount Area. After the fire, Cnoc Ná Ros ceased to function.

When Rosemount Resource Centre acquired its premises a number of men suggested the reformation of Cnoc Ná Ros as a project for men. A series of meetings were held involving over fifty local men all over the age of forty (the eldest being eighty-nine years old). It was agreed to establish a group using the historic Cnoc Na Ros name but adding the appendage 'old boys' as a reflection of the ages of those in attendance.

Since its rebirth in 1996 the group has gone from strength to strength. Although snooker is the key activity of the group the aims are much broader and snooker is seen as a tool as much as an end. The involvement of the youth has led to the running of a programme we have christened 'Shared Experience'. Many friendships and much inter-age understanding have been engendered over a hotly disputed mixed elderly/youth doubles game.

The key to our strategy is the use of social/recreational activities as a tool to develop social interaction for men. A further development of this strategy has been the formation of the Cnoc Na Ros gun club and the Cnoc Na Ros fishing club. These projects have produced an active membership of almost eighty men from our community aged from forty to ninety years now participating, not only in their own choice of recreation but to one degree or the other participating in the wider community activities of the Centre.
