In
April 2000, the Rosemount Resource Centre in conjunction with
Com Cubed Ltd, commenced a Community Employment Programme
aimed at unemployed people regardless of age, sex or background.
The emphasis is on developing each person's abilities and
skills - during the course of the programme each participant
is encouraged to try everything on offer with a view to identifying
their preferences and aptitudes. Training consists of practical,
on-the-job sessions and theory lessons covering a diverse
range of skills centered on information technology. Our main
aim is to produce a group of people with well rounded skills
backed by formal qualifications.
During
the course of the programme the participants are trained in
core skills but they can opt to specialise as the year progresses.
The training is provided by qualified personnel from both
within the Rosemount Resource Centre and Com Cubed organisations
but also external trainers from such organisations as Training
Direct and the North West Institute for Further & Higher
Education.

Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)

addition to the skills based programmes the participants are
exposed to a number of personal development and community
related issues. All of the first group to complete the programme
attained significant improvements in their skill base. Eight
found employment with Com Cubed and other IT based organisations,
two went of to full time education with a view to attaining
Higher National Diplomas in IT related skills. Five of the
group are now accredited ECDL testers.
This
continuing project has been supported with European "Peace
1" funds through the District Partnership (Derry City
Council area) and gap funds provided by the Department of
Education & Learning.
